National Biodiversity Network (NBN)
The National Biodiversity Network is a project to build the UK's first network of biodiversity information.

National Heritage Act
Legislation passed in 2002 relating to the management and future policy development for the historic environment. The National Heritage Act extends English Heritage's remit to include ancient monuments in, on or under the seabed up to the 12nm Territorial Limit around England.
National Monuments Record (NMR)
The National Monuments Record is the public archive of English Heritage, which contains over 10 million items of detailed data on archaeology, architecture, air photographs and maritime sites.
National Park
These are the most beautiful and dramatically different expanses of country in England, Wales and Scotland. The statutory title recognises their national importance and provides the highest degree of protection for these landscapes. Their designation is for the purposes of conserving their natural beauty, wildlife and human heritage and promoting the understanding and enjoyment of these special qualities. The National Park Authorities are heavily committed to Sustainable Development and this is a thread which runs throughout their work.

Natura 2000
A European network of nature conservation sites established under the EC Habitats and Birds Directives.
Natural England
Natural England was formed in 2006 by bringing together English Nature, the landscape, access and recreation elements of the Countryside Agency and the environmental land management functions of the Rural Development Service.
Nautical archaeology
The specialised study of maritime technology including ships, boats and other craft, together with the ancillary equipment necessary to operate them.
Nautical mile
A unit of length used in sea and air navigation, based on the length of one minute of latitude at the Equator. It is approximately 1/8th longer than the statute mile.

Noise
Noise is defined as unwanted sound and is usually measured in dB(A).
