There is an increasing awareness of the need for nature conservation in the marine environment. Significant progress has been made in raising stakeholder awareness, understanding and participation in the issues associated with the potential impacts of marine aggregate extraction on biodiversity and conservation. This section provides an overview of the variety of national, European and international conservation designations applying to UK waters, and highlights the best-practice measures which can be used to accommodate the marine aggregate extraction industry alongside existing offshore conservation requirements.
