Dredging Process

This section takes a detailed look at each of the major operational stages involved in the extraction of aggregates from the marine environment. By taking a step-by-step approach, it is possible to follow the path of the aggregates from the seabed to their onshore destination, through processes such as loading, screening, unloading, washing, processing and transporting. The two methods of dredging used by UK aggregate companies- Trailer Suction Hopper Dredging and Anchor/Static Dredging- are introduced and compared in terms of their relative merits. This section also considers the operational constraints which determine when and where aggregate extraction is an economically and environmentally viable option.
